Temple (19th/20th century)PRETTY POLLYwatercolour, signed bottom right and dated 1904, depicting one of the greatest fillies of English racing carrying her jockey wearing the yellow and blue colours of owner-breeder Major Eustace Loder, with a beaten rival in the background, framed, overall 32.5 by 36.5cm., wooden frame not original and requires some attentionPretty Polly, foaled in Ireland in 1901 and trained at Newmarket by Peter Gilpin, won 22 of her 24 races, including fifteen consecutive victories, at distances ranging from five furlongs to two and a quarter miles. In 1904, she won the Fillies' Triple Crown under her regular rider Billy Lane. She was a popular horse with the general public, possessing great charisma, and was accompanied everywhere by a companion cob named Little Missus. At stud, the daughters she produced wielded huge, still flourishing influence on top class horses, and the Pretty Polly Stakes is still run today, both at Newmarket and the Curragh.
