Victorian wooden snuff box presented to the jockey Charlie Marlow for winning the Gold Cup at Ascot in 1850,inscribed ASCOT GOLD CUP CHARLES MARLOW 1850, hinged lid, 4 by 7 by 2cm.Interestingly, the Ascot Gold Cup at this time had a different name. During a short period following Nicholas I of Russia's state visit to the 1844 running, it was known instead as the Emperor's Plate in his honour after the ruler had presented the racecourse with a new trophy for the race. Its original name was restored after nine years, during the Crimean War.Charles Marlow (1814-1882) was a jockey renowned for his honesty and integrity. He enjoyed a successful association with Lord Eglington's The Flying Dutchman on whom he also won the 1849 Derby and St Leger. The colt was also involved in one of the most celebrated match races in Turf history against Lord Zetland's Voltigeur at York.Tragically, the jockey's later years were spent in the workhouse and he died in Wiltshire's County Asylum.
