An oil painting of the racehorse ''Bendigo'' by Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas (British,1848-1943), signed and dated 1887, oil on board, portrait in a stable, 22 by 30cm., glazed in original gilt frame with raised title legend BENDIGO, overall 40 by 48cm., picture in good condition, small areas of damage to gilt frame Bendigo, foaled in 1880, was by Irish Derby winner Ben Battle and won the inaugural running of the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park in 1886, worth ?10,000 in prize money, a record in British horse racing at the time (equivalent to ?1.288 million today). He was also noted for his performances in top handicap races, on two occasions running honorably in both the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire of the same year and winning the latter in 1883. Other notable victories included the 1885 Lincoln and Hardwicke Stakes and the 1887 Jubilee and Champion Stakes.
