TURNER, in original fitted case Arthur Owen Turner (1909-1994) led Birmingham City to their highest ever top flight finish, sixth, in season 1955-56 and also to the F.A. Cup Final in the same season. The season before Birmingham were still in the Second Division, but Turner guided them to the Championship title in a very close run affair. Three teams finished the season on 54 points, with the 5th & 6th place clubs only one and two points behind. City won with a superior goal average from Luton Town, with Rotherham United missing out on promotion in third. Under Turner's managership the club also reached the semi-final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1958. As a player Turner's main association was as the Stoke City centre-half, before joining Birmingham City in 1939. In the latter part of his managerial career Turner led the transformation of Southern League club Headington United into Oxford United, reaching the Second Division of the Football League.
