Joe Mercer old gold Arsenal No.6 1950 F.A. Cup Final shirt, by Hope Brothers/Solus Sports, long-sleeved, white collar & cuffs, the badge inscribed 1949-50 The F.A. Cup Rules of the time stipulated that if there was a colour clash, and Arsenal & Liverpool played in red, then both teams were to wear their change kits. However, both Arsenal and Liverpool's change shirt colours were white. In these circumstances the rules said that a decision would be made by the toss of a coin. Arsenal lost the coin toss and therefore had to play in an alternative change strip. Manager Tom Whittaker chose an old gold coloured shirt. Thereafter, Arsenal continued to use the old gold as an alternative change kit throughout the 1950s. Exhibited: Arsenal FC Museum (on loan).
