Joe Mercer's Arsenal FC 1948 F.A. Charity Shield winner's medal, 14ct. gold, the obverse inscribed FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHARITY SHIELD Interestingly the gold is date stamped for 1939. This is because the medals had been prepared for the 1939 F.A. Charity Shield which was cancelled on the outbreak of the Second World War. Joe Mercer would have probably played in the 1939 match as he was a member of the Everton 1938-39 Football League Division One Champions who were set to play the F.A. Cup winners Portsmouth. In the end Mercer was awarded the medal nine years later but while playing in the red & white of Arsenal who beat Manchester United 4-3. Exhibited: Arsenal FC Museum (on loan).
