This was achieved through the final fixtures of the season which had began with Bolton Wanderers level on points with WBA but with a superior goal average. However, Bolton lost 2-1 at Birmingham whilst West Brom beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 at The Hawthorns to clinch the title. Bolton were promoted as runners-up.
