A racing plate worn by the 1891 Triple Crown winner ''Common'', the grooved area painted red, nailed onto a wooden base set with a plaque inscribed 1891, COMMON, WON 2,000 GNS., & THE DERBY From the inscription it would seem that this shoe was removed and preserved as a commemoration of the The Derby win at Epsom, the horse already a 2,000 Guineas winner. It can't be later than this because as a three-year-old he went on to win the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot before becoming the fifth racehorse in history to win the Triple Crown with victory in the St Leger. Common was owned by Sir Frederick Johnstone who had already owned a Derby winner, St Blaise, in 1883. The colt was trained by John Porter at Kingsclere and ridden by George Barrett.
