Michael Matthews (born 1933) 120 TO GO a golf painting featuring Laidlaw Purves in his signature red jacket, signed, oil on canvas, 61 by 76cm., titled on wooden frame Dr William Laidlaw Purves (1842-1917) was a member of the three big pioneer British golf clubs the R&A, Royal Blackheath and the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The Scot is best remembered for his important involvement in the establishment of two prominent golf clubs in southern England: Royal Wimbledon and Royal St George's, Sandwich. He was a doctor by profession, but had an unabated passion for golf and was still winning trophies when in his 70s. He also helped develop rules and handicapping systems and is a seminal figure in promoting ladies' golf.
