When they were team-mates at Manchester United Best and Cantwell exchanged Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland international shirts with one another. The letter further confirms that Cantwell was informed by Best that he had worn the shirt in a World Cup qualifier v Switzerland in 1964. Subsequent research has established that this was the home leg in Belfast 14th October 1964, as Northern Ireland wore long-sleeved round-collar shirts during the away leg in Lausanne on 14th November 1964. Northern Ireland won the match at Windsor Park 1-0, through a goal by Sunderland's Johnny Crossan. George Best won a total of 37 Northern Ireland international caps between 1964 and 1977. The Switzerland match at Windsor Park was his 4th cap. In the away leg in Lausanne Best scored the first of his nine international goals.
