Smith, was a nineteenth-century amateur footballer and considered to be the first great centre-forward. Smith was educated at Charterhouse School and played at club level for Corinthians. A school-teacher by profession, Smith was captain of England and his finest performance was perhaps his four goals in the 13-2 defeat of Ireland in 1899. An all-round sportsman, he also played for first-class cricket for Surrey and Oxford University.
