A London 1908 Olympic Games bronze third place prize medal struck for the [cancelled] golf team competition, designed by Bertram Mackennal, manufactured by Vaughton of Birmingham, bronze, two young maidens are crowning a winning athlete, the reverse with St George slaying the dragon, the rim inscribed THIRD PRIZE, GOLF (TEAMS) The golf tournament at the 1908 London Olympic Games was scheduled to have taken place on the links at Royal St. George's, Princes and Royal Cinque Ports. But when the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews became embroiled in a dispute with the Olympic Organising Committee, the golf tournament was cancelled suddenly just two days before the golf was due to begin. The medals had already been struck and the example being here was to be awarded to a team bronze medal winner. A silver medal is in the collection of the British Golf Museum.
