Silver golf trophy for a match involving The Duke of York (later King George VI) at Ton Pentre, South Wales, in 1924, hallmarked silver, shallow 2-handled trophy cup with a design incorporating clubs & balls, inscribed TONPENTRE GOLF CLUB, MAY 17th 1924, H.R.H. THE DUKE OF YORK K.G./CAPT. BASIL BROOKE v FRANK HODGES ESQ. M.P. J.P/EVAN WILLIAMS J.P, PRESENTED TO THE WINNERS, height 14.5cm. As well as the future king and father of Queen Elizabeth II, the match at Ton Pentre comprised the trade unionist leader, MP and Civil Lord to the Admiralty Frank Hodges, the UPP politician and future Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Basil Brooke, later Viscount Brookeborough; and Evan Williams, Chairman of the Mining Association. The event marked the opening of the public course in the Rhondda Valley.
