Hoof of the celebrated champion racehorse and stallion ''Bayardo'', preserved and mounted with gold-plate as an inkwell by the famous London taxidermist and publisher Rowland Ward Ltd., surmounted by a figurine of the thoroughbred and with the hoof engraved BAYARDO Bayardo was a bay colt foaled in 1906 by Bay Ronald out of Galicia and was a top two-year-old winning the Richmond, Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes. He had preparation problems for the Guineas and Derby but when he was right again recorded a remarkable sequence of 11 consecutive victories including the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Eclipse Stakes, St Leger and Champion Stakes. The colt stayed in training as a four-year-old and won four races including the Chester Vase and his primary target the Ascot Gold Cup. He retired with 22 career victories from 25 starts. Bayardo then became an influential stallion standing at his owner's Mr ''Fairie'' Cox's Manton Stud. He was leading sire in 1917 & 1918 and produced two First World War period Triple Crown winners Gainsborough and Gay Crusader, as well as the Oaks winning filly Bayuda. Bayardo died aged 11 after he contracted thrombosis.
