The four winning team then participated in the final tournament in Italy, these being England, Italy, Soviet Union & Yugoslavia. England were drawn against Yugoslavia and succumbed to an 87th minute goal by Dzajic. In the third-fourth place play-off England won the bronze medal by defeating the Soviet Union 2-0 through goals by Charlton & Hurst. Hosts Italy won the European title when beating Yugoslavia 2-0 in a replay.
