DAVIES, in original fitted case The Melly Cup bears the name of Charles Pierre Melly, the philanthropist born in Tuebrook, Liverpool in 1829. From the date inscription, perhaps the Cup celebrated the centenary of his birth in 1929. He is particularly remembered for his drinking fountains created to make clean, drinking water available to the general public in Liverpool. The family's wealth was created through the cotton trade.
