Hammer Price:
£1,900
Estimated Price:

£2,000 - £3,000

Henry Cooper's Great Britain boxing team gown from the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games, in rose coloured silk with white trim, complete with belt, the reverse embroidered with a Union Jack flag patch inscribed OLYMPIC GAMES 1952 and white felt lettering HENRY COOPER; sold with a signed letter of provenance from Henry Cooper's nephew Neal Cooper; and a scanned picture of Cooper fighting his Soviet opponent Anatoli Petrov at the Helsinki Games (3) Neal Cooper's letter reads: My uncle, Sir Henry Cooper, wore this gown at the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952. He was at the beginning of what would become a legendary career, having recently won the ABA championship as a light-heavyweight. He would have been so proud to wear this gown for Great Britain. Henry was defeated by the Russian, Anatoli Petrov, following a dubious decision. Onlookers said Henry had given the Russian a boxing lesson. He would turn professional two years later. The rest literally is history. Henry gave the gown to my late father, Bernard Henry Cooper, his older brother, in the 1960s and it has been in my family ever since. My father passed away last year and we have decided to put it up for auction with Graham Budd. I delivered it in person to Graham at Sotheby's on the 4th February 2016. It is our hope that it will be preserved for posterity and cherished by its new owner, just as we have cherished it.
