An archive of Arthur Stokes British cyclist at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games, the material relating to the Games and Stokes's cycling career in general, the Olympic memorabilia including various programmes and brochures and possibly his competitor's number patch, an invitation and other miscellaneous items, non-Olympic including correspondence, photographs, prize certificates, badges and other assortments The Coventry cyclist Arthur Stokes was generally recognised to be Britain's best cyclist prior to the 1912 Games. During the practice sessions in Sweden, however, he was involved in an unfortunate incident with a policeman. Stokes was about to take a wrong turn on the course and in his attempt to redirect Stokes the policeman accidentally hit and broke the British rider's wrist with his truncheon. Stokes was forced to withdraw from the Games.
