A medal from the inaugural World Amateur Boxing Championships held in Cuba in 1974, in gilt, inscribed CUBA 74 and designed with four stylised boxing gloves appearing as welcoming figures below a globe motif; sold together with official pin badges for the USA and Switzerland teams (3) These were the first World Amateur Championships organised by the governing body AIBA and designed to fall at the midway point between Olympic Games. A total of 245 boxers were entered from 45 countries. The choice of Cuba was a homage to the outstanding amateur heavyweight and triple Olympic gold medallist Teofilo Stevenson, said to be the most famous Cuban after Fidel Castro.
