Hyped as the 2-y-o race of the century, Frankel's opponents included two other unbeaten colts Dream Ahead, the 9 lengths winner of the Middle Park Stakes, and Godolphin's Champagne Stakes winner Saamidd nicknamed 'Pegasus' at his stables. Frankel was restrained by Queally before moving up to take the lead a furlong from the finish and win with a fair bit in hand by two and a quarter lengths from Roderic O'Connor who would subsequently win the Criterium International and then the Irish 2,000 Guineas as a three-year-old.
