Stanley Matthews's Stoke City Football League Division Two Championship medal 1962-63, 9ct. gold, inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, CHAMPIONS, DIVISION 2, SEASON 1962-63, in original fitted case inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE Stanley Matthews returned to his home town club Stoke in season 1961-62 on a two year contract at £50 per week (doubling his Blackpool pay). Playing Second Division football for the first time in 28 years, in his second season Matthews help the 'Potters' to the League title and promotion to the First Division. He was part of a team full of veteran professionals including Eddie Clamp, Jackie Mudie, Jimmy O'Neill, Eddie Stuart, Don Ratcliffe, Dennis Viollet and Jimmy McIlroy. Matthews was voted FWA Footballer of the Year for the second time in his career, fifteen years after he was made the inaugural winner of the award.
