A racing shoe worn by The Flying Dutchman in the Great Match v Voltigeur at York 13th May 1851, applied to a brass plate inscribed FLYING DUTCHMAN, WINNER, OF THE GREAT MATCH MAY 13th 1851, mounted in a presentation frame with printed information regarding The Flying Dutchman's pedigree, race career and the Great Match, 59 by 72cm., 23 by 28 1/4in. Provenance: The Flying Dutchman's racing shoe worn in The Great Match was purchased from a collector of horse racing shoes of which this was by far the most important. The shoe originally belonged to his grandfather and was believed to have come from the Briggs family. Harriet Elizabeth Briggs (1829-1902) was the niece of John Fobert, the man who trained The Flying Dutchman at Middleham. She married into the great Dawson racing dynasty of Thomas, Matt, Joseph and John. Her husband was Joseph who initially trained at East Isley, Berkshire before moving to Heath House then Bedford Lodge in Newmarket.
