THIS LOT HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN The London 1908 Olympic Games Great Britain running vest badge worn by the five miles gold medallist Emil Voigt, bearing silkwork national emblems and inscribed OLYMPIC GAMES 1908; sold with a signed letter of provenance from a family descendant of Emil Voigt in New Zealand (2) Emil Robert Voigt was born in Manchester to German parents 31st January 1883. The athlete had won the 4 miles at the 1908 AAA Championships and on the strength of that performance was expected to win Gold for Great Britain in the 5 miles at the London 1908 Olympic Games. He duly obliged winning the race easily. After two more successful athletics seasons, Voigt emigrated to Australia where he won further titles before retiring on the outbreak of World War One. In Australia he became one of the foremost pioneers of early radio, helping to set up 2KY (now Sky Sports Radio) under the ownership of the Labor Council of New South Wales. Voigt returned to England in 1936, before finally settling in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1948, where he died at age 90 16th October 1973.
