A gold, diamond & black enamel stickpin commemorating the Duke of Portland's 1888 Derby and 2,000 Guineas winner Ayrshire, by R & S Garrard & Co, London, designed with lettering to read AYRSHIRE with alternating diamonds & enamel representing the Duke's black & white racing colour, in original case Ayrshire was home-bred by the Duke of Portland in 1885. The colt was by the successful Cup horse Hampton out of Atalanta. Ayrshire was trained at Newmarket by George Dawson and in addition to his two classic wins he also won the Champagne Stakes, the Royal Stakes and the Eclipse Stakes. He enjoyed success as a stallion and his best son was arguably Bowling Brook who was exported to America where he won the Belmont Stakes and the Metropolitan Handicap.
