Jad Davies (1909-1998) LIGHTNING SKETCHES OF GRAHAM HILL AND FOUR OTHER SPORTSMEN a collection of five original caricatures variously in crayon, ink and pencil, the first of Graham Hill, signed by the subject and artist, also inscribed 'About 60 seconds sketch. As Graham Hill was near me, at the VIP opening of the new Ashford Kent Airport, 1969. A typical very fast sketch with a Biro'; 26 by 19cm., 10 by 7in.; the second of Reg Harris bearing his signature, inscribed 'World Champion Racing Cyclist, President Pickwick Bicycle Club', an irregular shaped cutting, overall 19 by 14cm., 7 by 5in.; two smaller sketches of Allan Watkins, England test cricketer (1948-52), and Derek Ufton, Kent cricketer and Charlton Athletic footballer (1949-60), both signed by the subject, the latter on a 1960 fixture list; plus another of John Blackburn, 1973 captain of Penryn RFC, inscribed and signed by the artist, 29 by 21cm., 11 by 8in.; sold with copies of information relating to Jad's career (6). Although untrained as an artist, Jad Davies made 'Lightning Sketches' of all and sundry that he met, either casually or from a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in the business and sporting worlds. In a career that spanned over 60 years, his subjects eventually numbered the good and the famous in their thousands, most of whom were delighted to autograph their likeness on the spot.
