Emma MacDermott (contemporary) THREE RACEHORSES AND JOCKEYS JUMPING A FENCE signed E MacD, dated '85 and numbered 5 from an edition of 6, large bronze group with a rich dark brown patina, mounted on a polished granite plinths, height 40cm., 15 3/4in., length 91.5cm., 36in., width 23cm., 9in. Emma MacDermott studied at St Martins College of Art in London. She has become one of the world's most sought after equestrian sculptors with exhibitions in Ireland, America, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. She has mainly produced pieces for private commission including a life-size statue of Sadlers Wells for Coolmore Stud, Caerleon and Vintage Crop for Dr. Michael Smurfit, Nijinsky for Vincent O'Brien, Ridgewood Pearl (larger than life-size) for Sean Coughlan, Stanerra for Frank Dunne, and Ouija Board for Lord Derby. MacDermott's work is not solely restricted to horses and she has produced a life-size bronze of John Magnier and also figures of camels for Sheikh Mohammed. On 19th April, Arkle's birthday, in 2014 her life-size bronze of the legendary steeplechaser and his jockey Pat Taaffe was unveiled. This was the first official statue of Arkle to have been commissioned in Ireland. This was also produced in an edition of 27 quarter-size bronzes representing Arkle's 27 race wins. One of these figures was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth by the Irish President Michael D Higgins in 2014. The Arkle bronzes made available to the general public were sold at a price of 60,000 Euros each.
