A specially struck 1904 F.A. Cup winner's medal commissioned by Manchester City FC for their squad player R. Dearden who was not selected for the final tie, in 9ct. gold by Vaughton of Birmingham, a variant on the Football Association design with the three lions shield replaced by the Manchester crest, inscribed MANCHESTER CITY F.C., WINNERS OF ENGLISH CUP, 1903-04, R. DEARDEN A kind gesture by Manchester City FC for one of their fringe players. Dearden was essentially an understudy for first-team half-back Samuel Ashworth. He played in six League games during season 1903-04 but did not start in any of the Cup ties. A highly unusual medal presentation.
