Medals and badges relating to the tennis player Kenneth Powell including a London 1908 Olympic Games participant's medal, the pewter Olympic medal in replacement case; together with a Surrey County L.T.A. 1908 Senior Competition medal in silver, cased; a bronze medal for the Inter County Competition 1909, named, runners-up, Surrey; and three metal & enamel badges for continental tennis clubs, K.L.T.K., B.L.T.V. inscribed BREMEN DULWICH and dated 1913 and the third for a tournament in Berlin; the lot also including a printed In Memoriam card for Kenneth Powell ''who gave his life for his Country's Cause, 18th February 1915 (7) Kenneth Powell (1885-1915) was an all-round sportsman and most unusually participated in two entirely separate sports at the London 1908 Olympic Games - Lawn Tennis and Athletics - and received two participant's medals one for each discipline, one of which is offered here. In the athletics Powell competed in the 110 metres hurdles but was eliminated in heat 5, having hit the 9th hurdle handing the decisive advantage to the American eventual finalist William Rand. In the lawn tennis competitions at Wimbledon, he participated in the gentlemen's singles and doubles and in the latter was placed fifth with his partner W.C. Crawley. Powell was killed in action during the First World War, struck by a bullet near Ypres In the next auction a group of medals relating to Powell's athletics exploits will be offered.
