Anderlecht v Manchester United European Cup 1st Leg programme at the Stade Emile Verse 12th September 1956, good condition except for team-changes in ink This was the first match ever played by an English club in European competition. This honour should have gone to Chelsea the previous season, but the Football Association withdrew the 1954-55 League Champions from the European Cup perceiving the new tournament to be a distraction from domestic football. Chelsea were replaced by Gwardia Warszawa of Poland. Manchester United won the game at Anderlecht 2-0 through goals by Viollet & Taylor and would progress to the semi-finals in their first season of European football.
