£3,000 - £4,000
A Cortina 1956 Winter Olympic Games silver second place prize medal, in silver, designed by C. Affer, the obverse designed with a female head crowned by Olympic Rings, flaming torch and legend, the reverse with a snowflake superimposed over Mount Pomagagnon; complete with original red leather case issued by Loriolio Fratelli of Milano & Roma, enamelled Olympic Rings to lid, plus outer paper box The original recipient of the medal is unknown. It is rare to see this medal complete with the original case. Some reference works transpose the colours of the case for the silver & bronze prize medals, this is because the photographer for the Official Olympic report shot the medals in the wrong boxes. The accompanying text correctly states that the silver medal was presented in the red leather case, and the bronze in the white case. This is further supported by photographs from the award ceremonies showing medallists holding silver medals with red boxes and bronze medals with white.
