A fine quality oak box set with a brass plaque engraved ''All England Tennis Club 1922'', which is the date that the present Club moved from Worple Road to Church Road, Wimbledon, manufactured to a high quality by C.J. Hill, Late Catchpole and Williams, 223 Oxford Street, sealed and signed Herbert Sykes, partially relined in green cloth, the inside of the lid still retaining the original red cloth (damaged) covering horse hair stuffing, brass carrying handles, 74 by 32 by 28cm., 29 1/2 by 12 1/2 by 11in. The original purpose of this box is unknown, but the date suggests that it was made specifically for the Club's move to its new grounds in 1922 and to contain items of importance that required sealing during transportation, perhaps deeds, plans or other official documents. This seems more likely than for simply storing tennis equipment.
