A rare original 1867 Carte de Visite photograph featuring Spencer Gore who would become the gentlemen's singles champion at the inaugural All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon in 1877, depicted here in the Harrow School cricket team, 9 boys depicted, two being absent, comprising S.W. Gore, F.G. Templer, R.J. Graham, W.B. Money, W.H. Hadow, S. Pelham, G. Chetwynd, J. Walsh & W. Penn, the two absentees are C.J. Smith & F.E.R. Fryer, Spencer Gore can be seen to the top of the picture holding the flag Few images of Gore seem to exist. Despite his prowess at the game and his historic first triumph at Wimbledon, it is recorded that Gore did not foresee a great future for lawn tennis which he considered dull and much inferior to his first sporting love of cricket. It is said that Gore's victory was defined by his expert and superior volleying skills.
