Perry Groves's match-worn Arsenal No.12 jersey from the celebrated match v Liverpool at Anfield 26th May 1989, yellow & blue, short-sleeved; sold with a signed hand written letter of authenticity from Perry Groves The final match of the 1988-89 Football League season was contested on 26 May 1989, between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield. By sheer coincidence, it was the match between the top two teams in the First Division and the teams were close enough on points for the match to act as a decider for the First Division Championship. Arsenal needed to win the game by at least two goals to take the title, while Liverpool enjoyed home advantage and had won the F.A. Cup the previous weekend to set up the possibility of a double. Arsenal's Alan Smith put the Gunners ahead with a 52nd minute header. With a quarter of an hour to go and Arsenal still requiring a second goal, Manager George Graham brought on Perry Groves and Martin Hayes and switched to a more attacking formation. In injury time Arsenal launched a last gasp attack. Lee Dixon played a long pass to Alan Smith whose flick on was reached by Michael Thomas who had surged forward from midfield, withheld a challenge and slotted past Grobbelaar from within the penalty box. The match is considered to be one of the most dramatic conclusions to a league season in the history of the English game and was witnessed by an incredulous television audience at a tine that live matches were still something of a rarity. It is also regarded as the starting point of a renaissance in English football and the moment where people started to see the untapped commercial potential of live football on television
