Alex Stepney's 1977 Manchester United F.A. Cup final winner's medal, 9ct. gold, inscribed FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHALLENGE CUP, WINNERS, ALES STEPNEY, the rim inscribed SEASON 1976-77, in original fitted case; sold together with & b&w photograph of Alex Stepney on the pitch at Wembley after the game with his medal and holding the F.A. Cup aloft in front of the United faithful. (2) In the 1977 F.A. Cup final Manchester United defeated Liverpool 2-1 denying Liverpool what would have been a Treble having won the League and European Cup. South Londoner Alex Stepney began his career at Millwall before moving to Manchester United after a brief spell at Stamford Bridge. He made a total of 433 appearances for United between 1966 and 1978 and was a member of the 1968 European Cup winning team. Stepney also won a single England international cap at a time of intense competition for the 'keeper's slot. By coincidence a Liverpool runners-up medal is offered in this auction as lot 617.
