Kauto Star's 'Betfair Million' winner's blanket signed by Clive Smith & Paul Nicholls, signatures in black marker pen; sold with a photograph of Kauto Star wearing the blanket (2) The Betfair Million was a generous promotional scheme run by the bookmakers Betfair. They offered a ?1 million bonus to any steeplechaser that won their own sponsored race the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in addition to the two major Grade 1 3m+ steeplechase the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park and the Cheltenham Golf Cup. In 2006-07 National Hunt legend Kauto Star, rated only behind Arkle in the history of jump racing, became the one and only winner of the Betfair. The blanket being offered here was commissioned to commemorated Kauto Star's unique achievement. Its value as a unique piece of racing history has been enhanced by the autographs of the owner and trainer Clive Smith and Paul Nicholls, whose signatures are unlikely to be seen side-by-side together again following the end of their professional relationship. Kauto Star is currently being retrained as a dressage prospect for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games under the supervision of Laura Collett.
