An extremely rare and early example of an iron headed blade putter circa 1800, that was traditionally attributed when in the collection of the Royal Perth Golfing Society to the maker Simon Cossar of Leith (1766-1811), hickory shaft bearing a paper label inscribed in ink ''probably Simon Cossar'' Putters were almost exclusively wooden headed implements in the feather ball era. However, a very similar looking metal headed blade putter to the example offered here appears in Lemuel Francis Abbott's famous 1807 oil painting of Mr Henry Callendar, thereby proving their existence at this period. Provenance: The Royal Perth Golfing Society, Christie's Scotland, 7th July 1998, lot 80.
