A winner's medal awarded to the Manchester United goalkeeper Harry Moger on the occasion of the inaugural Football Association Charity Shield v Queen's Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge in 1908, 15ct. gold, inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHARITY SHIELD 1908, in original fitted case similarly inscribed to the lid in gilt; sold together with a photograph of Harry Moger (2) The first charity shield was contested by the Football League champions, Manchester United, and the Southern League champions Queen's Park Rangers. The match was played at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge on 27th April 1908 and ended as a 1-1 draw. The goals were scored by Billy Meredith for Manchester United and Frank Cannon for QPR. The replay did not occur until the beginning of the following season on 29th August, also at Stamford Bridge. United won the game 4-0 with Jimmy Turnbull scoring a hat-trick, and George Wall netting the other. Thereafter a replay has never been organised. £1,275 was raised for charity through the match. The competition had evolved from the Sheriff of London Charity Shield, which also sought to match the best professional and amateur teams of the day. Harry Moger was born at Southampton in 1879 and played his early football at Freemantle and their local rivals Southampton. In 1903 the goalkeeper was signed by Manchester United and he would stay at the club until his retirement in 1912 making a total of 242 League appearances. While at United he helped United to two League titles in 1907-08 and 1910-11, and was also a member of the F.A. winning side of 1909. Harry Moger died in Manchester 16th June 1927, aged 47.
