It was regarded as Ireland's premier regatta. The major event was the 'Dublin Metropolitan Challenge Cup' valued at £100, an event for four-oared boats (plus a coxswain). 'The long line of yachts and trawlers, dressed with flags, divided the river into two avenues and looked highly effective, and the long course, extending to the eastward, looked bright and sunny in the brisk South-Easter which came up with the flood tide.' Large crowds saw the University boat finish ten lengths ahead of their opponents.
