A signed manuscript letter from Lord Burghley dated 8th September 1927, on Burghley House headed paper, three pages in ink, addressed to the British athlete Laurie Edwards a former half mile world champion and later trainer to Derby County Football Club, the letter begins with Lord Burleigh thanking Edwards for his invitation to watch his football team play in London, the remainder a discussion on athletics and how his season was going, and describes a meeting in Germany where he 'took a beating from [Joachim] Buchner in the 400 metre in 48 1/10th, a very useful time'; this letter and the other items in the lot were in the possessions of Laurie Edwards and the lot includes his blue silk running vest stitched with a Union Jack, seven various photos/postcards including one of Edwards wearing this very vest; and a clipping from the Derby Express 21.7.1923 discussing the excellent training techniques Edwards had introduced at Derby County (10 items) The following athletics season Lord Burghley won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games. Incidentally, his German rival Buchner ran in the 400m flat winning a bronze medal in a time 1/10th of a second slower than when he had beaten Lord Burghley in the 1927 race in Germany.
