A group of four medals awarded to John McGough the Great Britain Olympic athlete and football trainer to Glasgow Celtic, Manchester City and Cavan G.A.A. in Ireland, comprising his 1908 London Olympic Games participation medal, by Vaughton, in white metal, designed by Bertram Mackennal with a winged figure of victory, and a quadriga winning a chariot race; together with three athletics medals, two being silver Amateur Athletics Association Championship second prize medals for the one mile, the first at Rochdale in 1904, the other at Stamford Bridge in 1905, the final medal is a West of Scotland Harries issue in bronze commemorating McGough's achievements of setting Scottish record times for the 1,000 yards and the 1 1/2 miles in the summer of 1905; the lot including some press cuttings featuring John McGough John McGough had won the silver medal in the 1,500 metres at the 1906 Athens Intercalated Olympic Games. Unfortunately when the Games came to Great Britain two years later he was carrying an injury and ran in a bandaged ankle which meant he was unable to progress beyond his heat. McGough (1876-1967) had been born in County Monaghan in Ireland but ran for Scotland and Great Britain. Primarily he was a miler. During the winter months his services as a fitness trainer and skilled masseur were employed by Celtic and Manchester City Football Clubs, and he also had a later association with G.A.A. at Cavan including during the All-Ireland Final in 1947 played at the Polo Grounds, New York. Many of his huge collection of running trophies were displayed at his athletics Club, Bellahouston Harriers, Glasgow.
