In an unprecedented era of British middle distance runners, Sebastian Coe faced fierce rivalry from Steve Ovett, Steve Cram and Peter Elliott. Coe won a total of four Olympic medals and at various times set eight outdoor and three indoor World Records. Following his retirement from athletics, Sebastian Coe entered the House of Commons as Conservative MP for Falmouth and Camborne and took a life peerage in 2000. The Lord Coe then led the successful British bid for the 2012 London Olympic Games, and is presently Chairman of the Organising Committee.
