A 1948 London Olympic Games boxed participation medal, designed by B Mackennal, struck by John Pinches of London, the obverse with a view of Westminster, the reverse with a victorious charioteer in a quadriga, in original paper box; sold together with a 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games boxed Merit Medal, by Tillander of Helsinki, silvered metal, the design incorporating Olympic Rings and torch, blue & white striped ribbon, in original paper box; the lot including various photocopied press cuttings relating to the recipient of these medals These medals were issued to George Makepeace, a water polo official/referee at the 1948 Olympic Games. The issue of the 1952 Merit Medal would suggest that he also played a role in the Helsinki Games. At home, Mr Makepeace was President of the Birmingham and District Swimming Association and Water Polo League. He died in 1958. Provenance: Family descent
