At the time his win in the 1,500m at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games was hailed as 'the greatest race ever run'. Aged 21, he still remains the youngest ever winner of the Olympic 1,500m. He was also the youngest ever British Army Brigadier-General, as well as being amongst the most highly decorated British World War I officers. His uncle Clement Jackson had been a co-founder of the Amateur Athletic Association in 1880.
