(Pindar) Olympia, Pythia, Nemea, Isthmia, published in Geneva, 1626, title with woodcut vignette., parallel Greek and Latin text, vellum bindings Pindar (c.522-443 BC) was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from Thebes whose work is well preserved and who is associated with the Olympic Games and others through his Victory Odes, or Epinikion. These were performed not at the Games itself but at the celebration surrounding the champion's return to his hometown or perhaps at the anniversary of his victory. The odes celebrate runners, pentathletes, wrestlers, boxers and charioteers. Pindar normally alludes elaborately to a myth connected to the victor's family or birthplace. The odes were performed by a chorus that sang and danced to the musical accompaniment.
