An interesting gilt-metal & blue enamel badge issued to participants in one of the first commercially organised football match excursions in 1914, inscribed J.M.D.'s ''TEAM'', FOOTBALL EVENING NEWS, APRIL 4th 1914 Included in this lot are two scans of pages from the Football Evening News Reports Edition Special International Number 4th April 1914. The front page reports on Scotland's comfortable 3-1 victory over England at Hampden Park before a capacity 120,000 Hampden Park crowd. Page 4 records the extensive and successful arrangements made by J.M. Dick for ''a unique excursion of two long specials'' chartered by the Football Evening News to convey ''500 London men and even a few women'' from Euston on the Friday night. In fact, the report goes on to state ''The people were of the right class and came from almost every part of the south-eastern corner of England ... Never before in the history of football has such an immense and well-organised party been conveyed so far, specially to see a match.'' The article also carries two photographs, the first portraying J.M. Dick and his extensive organising staff. The other a group of enthusiastic fans from ''J.M.D's Team.'' ready to board the train back south. Despite the dismal result for the travelling fans it is hoped that they had a thoroughly enjoyable day, as the horrors of the First World War would begin just four months later.
