The club adopted the City title when they turned professional in season 1897-98 and was accepted into the Southern League. This was two years after the date of the present season ticket. It is believed that this season ticket is the oldest item of Bristol City memorabilia ever to have been offered at auction, and could even be the oldest surviving object related to the club. The old amateur Bristol South End club was only in existence for one season before the date of this season ticket.
