The format was changed in 1992 and the Cup was then competed for by international teams. In 1992 Japan hosted Argentina and Wales. The Japan v Wales match was played in Matsuyama on 7th June 1992. Wales won the match 1-0 through a goal by Mark Bowen in the 40th minute despite finishing with 10 men following Iwan Roberts's red card with half an hour left to play. Argentina won the Kirin Cup. The defender Satoshi Tsunani played 78 times for Japan between 1980 and 1995 and was a member of Japan's victorious AFC Asian Cup team of 1992. Tsunami's jersey was gained as a swap by one of the Welsh players that day.
