The format was changed in 1992 and the Cup was then competed for by international teams. In 1992 Japan hosted Argentina and Wales. The Japan v Wales match was played in Matsuyama on 7th June 1992. Wales won the match 1-0 through a goal by Mark Bowen in the 40th minute despite finishing with 10 men following Iwan Roberts's red card with half an hour left to play. Argentina won the Kirin Cup.
