The identity of the medal's recipient, James Browne, is uncertain. The Edinburgh Medal in 1899 was won by the golfer J.C. Ure. So Browne's role in the competition at Troon that merited the award of this medal will require further research. For the record the medal is hallmarked 1898 and the engraving is also of the period.
