A 9ct. gold Football League Championship medal season 1961-62, inscribed THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE, CHAMPIONS, DIVISION 1, SEASON 1961-62, IPSWICH TOWN F.C., J. COMPTON, in original box of issue This medal was awarded to Ipswich Town left-back John Compton for his part in the Suffolk club's historic Championship winning season of 1961-62 under the stewardship of Alf Ramsey. John Compton was born in Poplar, London, on 27th August 1937 and joined Chelsea as a junior in 1955. Having made only 12 first team appearances at Stamford Bridge he moved to Ipswich Town in 1960 where he played 111 times before finishing his career at Bournemouth, retiring through injury in 1965.
