Billy McNeill's match-worn green & white Celtic jersey from the 1969-70 European Cup semi-final with Leeds United, long-sleeved, crew neck collar; sold together with a signed letter of provenance from the former Leeds United player Mick Jones (2) Celtic won 1-0 at Elland Road in the 1st leg, before beating Leeds 2-1 at Hampden in the 2nd leg in front of 136,505 (still a European record today). This shirt was gained as a swap by Leeds United's Mick Jones, although he cannot recall if it was after the Elland Road or Celtic Park leg. The shirt was subsequently acquired directly from Mick Jones by the present vendor. This lot offers a rare opportunity to acquire a Celtic shirt that was worn by the first British player to lift the European Cup, and in a match many view as the original 'Battle of Britain' encounter between English and Scottish champion clubs, and certainly without doubt an all time classic game of British football. William McNeill was born at Bellshill on 2nd March 1940. He was a one club man through and through and when he retired in 1975 he had made a staggering 790 appearances. An even more amazing statistic is that he played the full 90 minutes in every single one of these matches, having never been substituted in all his entire playing career. As a manager McNeill returned to Celtic Park for two spells between 1978-1983 and 1987-1991. In the present day Billy McNeill is an official ambassador for the club. Famously, Billy McNeill as caption of the 'Lisbon Lions' lifted the European Cup trophy in 1967. He also won a total of 29 Scotland international caps.
